Australian Wood Duck

Another photo from my friends’ holiday in Australia.

Is it a duck or a goose? It seems to have features of both and its Latin name has been adjusted  somewhat (from chen to anser?) to cover both features. Not sure about the Latin names, but there is definitely something goosey about this wood “duck.”

Hi,

My friends!

See me here?

I’m a wood duck,

Why am I called that?

No, I’m not made of wood,

I nest in tree cavities

Away from many predators,

My flightless ducklings leap from the tree,

When I call from the ground, they jump to me.

Wow! Another interesting Australian creature. A flightless goose-duck. It really does look like a cross.

The birds down under in Aus and NZ are so varied. This wood duck is not at all similar to the ones we see in Stanley Park. Happy Wednesday Anneli. Allan

Ours nest in tree cavities as well. It’s a lovely photo of this different looking wood duck.

Whatever duck she is, she is a very pretty duck and she looks like she knows that. I like your fun little poem.

That is a new one for me – I will have to check with Brad to see if he saw one while he was visiting there last year.
