Baja Dogs

We are the guardians of the roof,

And though it’s hot up here,

Our job is to say, “Woof-woof-woof,”

And strike all hearts with fear.

As chow I’m toughest of them all,

I make intruders stop,

I only hope that I don’t fall,

That would be quite a drop.

With me there is no serious threat,

I pace the roof above,

And what you see is what you get,

A dog in need of love.

I’m not a guard dog as you see,

I’d be one if I could,

The roof dogs all make fun of me,

Because I’m made of wood.

My name is Andy and I sleep,

I never am awake,

A battery makes me breathe so deep,

Because, you see, I’m fake.

*** Andy was a stuffed toy dog, just like a teddy bear. He had a battery inside him that made him look like he was breathing by making his chest go up and down. He had me totally fooled and the woman who owned him had him on her shop counter, loving every minute of my reaction as I asked if I could pet him. I was really surprised when she told me he was completely “not real.”

He looks real just in that photograph, so I probably be the same if I had actually seen him.

Wow! Sometimes the fakes are amazingly lifelike. He looks real to me, too.

I was saying what a pretty dog it was and the owner said, “His name is Andy.” I believed he was real and asked if I could pet him. She was smirking a lot and had such a good chuckle over having fooled me. It was kind of funny, but I was so sure it was a real dog. The dog’s chest moved up and down like he was breathing.

That is a fun poem and great photos. In our neighborhood we have a Saint Bernard who sits on top of a fence and barks his head off at every passerby below, human and dog. I call him Cujo after that horror movie about a rabid Saint Bernard. My wife and daughter think I am being rude, but I don’t think the owners have ever heard me calling him Cujo.

If they don’t stop him from barking, maybe he deserves to be called Cujo.

I sort of agree Anneli. People below are intimidated by an almost 150+lbs dog hovering over them and aggressively barking. It is not a good idea to let him do that. If he were to jump down he might get hurt. Our big Leonberger was similar in size and loudness of bark but he was behind a metal gate and he was a lot less aggressive, more friendly. In fact people went over to the gate to pet him. With “Cujo”, I am not sure you want to try to pet him even if he were to come down.

I remember going for a walk and having a chow rush, growling and barking, to the fence of his yard as I went past his house. I thought he was going to leap over the gate. Scared the daylights out of me.

Yes that is another fairly big dog that is not pleasant when acts hostile. Our Leonberger was usually very friendly. The neighbor had a party and we had forgotten to lock the gate and some people let him out with our Pug and Japanese Chin in tow. When I came home they were all standing around him feeding him and the little ones Hors d’oeuvres. He didn’t bark and he loved the attention, all 150lbs of him. I interupted the party and brought them inside.

I have to smile how even the wooden dog is on a leash! 😀 Aww … the fake dog is so cute and I recently read how fake cats that purr and move a little are now used in some care homes to calm and bring relaxation for the residents.

I liked the chain idea on the wooden dog (that was a cute addition), not that I like the idea of chaining a dog, but I do like the idea of a leash for walks. And yes, care home residents must miss the pets they have to leave behind.

The fake dog certainly looks real to me. I’d have been fooled. He’s lovely.

    I enjoyed your poem, Anneli.

What a nice post this is. I love the pictures and your poem to go with the dogs. At least the dogs seem to be fed well, Some of the dogs are good looking ones, maybe even pure bred?

Loved the poem, Anneli. When we come across a human ‘Andy’ in our daily lives, he or she makes us less trusting of others. Instead of cynicism, showing we care can make some come alive.

Finally, a dog that never needs a walk or a pooper scooper. Dogs barking from the roof would be a bit threatening, I think. Happy Monday Anneli. Allan

I love the idea of roof dogs. Mine is more like the counter-sleeping-dog!

Roof top dogs barking, jumping, and jiving. Let sleeping dogs lie. 😃

He looks totally real, wow! The stick dog is funny. The flag looks like it’s a Mexico flag?

Rather threatening to have dogs looming overhead. I guess they were a good deterrent. That toy dog does look real to me.

Are those roof dogs from when you were in Mexico? Have you heard about what’s happening there now? Sure wouldn’t want to be a tourist. That pretend dog is really cool. Was that at a shop near where you live or somewhere else?

When we encounter on our walks overly aggressive dogs, we would prefer your dog made of wood.

I remember seeing breathing dog and cat toys much like Andy sold at a store somewhere. I don’t remember what store it was since I only went there with my mom and grandma once. An orange cat was on display, while the others were in their packages.
