Looking for Love

Two years ago almost to the day, a red-shafted flicker landed on our chimney to take advantage of the reverberations of the drumming on metal. It saves his vocal chords when calling for his girl.

Turn up the sound on the video, and watch for these cute little actions:

Mr. Flicker talks to Mrs. Flicker just before she arrives, doing a little dance on top of the chimney, tail feathers spread out as if he’s trying to be a peacock displaying his fan.

Mr. Flicker has the red cheek slash while Mrs. Flicker does not.

She arrives and looks around as if she’s trying to find a way up to the top. He chatters to encourage her, she flies down onto the other side of the roof, and then comes back for a second look. She stretches her neck to look around the other side of the chimney as if she’s looking for the elevator.

Wow! What a great capture, Anneli! Mr Flicker has found himself quite a drum and is putting on such a show for Mrs Flicker. Is your video recent? It looks like you had some gorgeous clear skies.

Yes, I took that video a couple of days ago when we had a few rare minutes of sunshine. The video on the other post that I linked to was taken 2 years ago, and was current at the time. I thought it was funny that the drumming this year was within a day of the drumming on the post from 2 years ago.

I love watching the flickers – and you got a great video(s) of the mating routine – year after year!

Don’t you hear those sounds inside through your fireplace? A woodpecker used to do that on our chimney in Florida and it drove me nuts. He’d do it for hours on some days.

Your sky is so clear. We still have those hazy streaks filling our sky here. 😞

Smart of Mr. Flicker to drum on the metal but poor Mrs. Flicker seemed flustered. Odd that she interpreted the drumming on the metal as a mating call! In the end, did she reach the top or did Mr. Flicker come down? Nature is amusing and wonderful.

Anneli, thank you for sharing both posts. The interaction between these birds is precious to witness. They are so direct in their actions.
