Oh, Henry!

Henry is back again, and once again, in broad daylight. This is the part that worries me. If he is confident enough to make himself at home in the middle of the day, where does that leave us? Can I still feel okay about letting our Emma outside to run around in her fenced yard?

Here’s Henry coming from the woodshed where he had a drink of water that I had put out for the squirrels. He’s heading straight for our house.

In the first video he comes right to where I have the wheelbarrow in front of my veggie garden, which is in front of the house. In the second one he continues on to the trees on the other side of our deck. He was so close to the house I had to stop the first video, run to the other end of the deck and start the second video.

Here he is already up pretty high, but he keeps going up on the back of the tree until he gets to a big branch where he has a place big enough to stop for another nap, as he’s in the habit of doing in the daytime. He’s safe up there and has a lovely view.

But I’m going to have to start charging him rent, and maybe a playground fee.

Well… I would consider contacting the authority that handles wild animal issues in your area and have him trapped and relocated, Anneli. Beautiful Emma must be protected. ❤️

This gave me a smile, especially the line about charging Henry rent and a playground fee! He certainly seems to have adopted your property as part of his daily routine. I can understand your concern though, seeing him so comfortable wandering around in broad daylight does make it feel a little different than an occasional nighttime visitor. The photos tell quite a story, from his stop at the squirrel water station to his afternoon nap high in the tree. It looks like Henry has found himself a pretty nice neighborhood! I hope Emma can continue enjoying her yard safely while Henry keeps his adventures to the trees.

You have it all sorted out. That’s exactly how it is around here. We might have to try a live trap and have him relocated. I have a feeling he’s been made welcome by others in the neighbourhood and is losing his fear of people. That makes him unpredictable and dangerous to house pets.

Yes, his lack of concern is definitely worrying, especially where Emma is concerned. I looked up the legislation around trapping them and here’s what I found:

    https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/environment/pesticides-pest-management/managing-pests/animals/raccoons

Maybe there’s something in there that you can make use of. Good luck with this guy, Anneli.

I had a look at the site. Thanks, Lynette. For now we’re not doing anything. We don’t leave food or anything compostable where any animals can get it. But raccoons are all over the island. We just have to take precautions.

Once they get to comfy with their new habitat, they seldom leave. It may be time to send Henry packing. Have a good afternoon Anneli. Allan
