Oh, Dear Deer

My family used to wander here,

And always found some food,

But now we’re left with little cheer,

It’s dampened my good mood.

The gate was open wide today,

And I could walk right in,

The luscious shrubs appeared to say,

“Don’t bite me, it’s a sin.”

I tasted one and found it tart,

Went on to try the tree,

I opened up my mouth to start,

When people frightened me.

They took my picture as I ran,

Toward the open gate,

I need to make it, if I can,

I hope I’m not too late.

This buck had come in through the front gate and luckily found the back gate which we had quickly opened for its escape.

Oh deer, indeed Anneli. Cute poem and great photos. Your grass looks toasty crisp. Still no rain? We had a little shower here this AM, but not much. We have also had deer in the yards nearby, not a usual occurrence. Happy Thursday. Allan

Lovely poem and photos, Anneli. Great that you got the gate open for him and he definitely didn’t seem too perturbed since he could see a way out. As Allan remarked, your grass seems really dry. You’re probably getting about as much rain as we are.

What a beautiful deer. My sis has herds of deer (5-10) that roam her woods. They’re very timid, though.

    Dear Anneli
Deer regularly visit our garden too. For us, they are a nuisance as they like flowers and nibble bark. We have to fence off our ground, which we don’t like, and it’s not so easy because of the old hedges.
    Nevertheless, nice pictures.

    Martina

Wildlife comes to you, we have to go look for it here 😏. A good thing he left your garden alone and had that escape route.

A wonderful poem, and a great glimpse of nature as well. We have not seen much deer in our area so far this year, and I am hopeful it is solely because they’ve found a “sweet spot” to live within. The suburbs have a lot of greenery, water, etc. for them to settle into, and we’d much rather they hang out there than wandering around the roads!

He’s a beauty, Anneli. I’m glad he was able to pass through without nibbling on your flowers and trees. I hope you’re having a beautiful summer. Hugs.

A handsome dude he is. But glad that he “escaped” before eating any of your yummy shrubs! Very cool photos and video!

Habitat fragmentation is a huge challenge for so many mammals. It is tough for them when they get pushed out by development. I hope you get some rain soon. Very dry here too.
