This is a repeat of a posting I made in September of 2017. I probably have many different followers now, so I hope those who have stuck with me for the last nine years don’t mind the repetition. I wanted to repost it because it made me smile at the time (and still does when I think of it).
So back in 2017, it went like this:
Recently I listened to some of the UN speeches on TV. I like to have the closed captioning feature turned on in case I miss anything they said. I found out that some countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and a couple of others have their food brought in from very far away. Now, I must stress that only a few countries are doing this.
Apparently, they have a UFO bringing potatoes in from some other planet, or maybe even from another galaxy. But why just them? Well, the closed captioning said it’s because they have …
a disc tater ship. Honestly! That’s what the closed captioning said: “These countries pretend to have a democracy when in fact they have a disc tater ship.”
I always KNEW there was life beyond our Earth!

And to think that it’s been the taters all this time causing the UFO hysteria. I knew they were shady … 😉

And you can tell if it’s a tater ship because, being round, they roll around and make the ship teeter-tater as it flies, making it look like a UFO.

What do you call a bossy potato? Dictator. Sorry 🙂

‘Disc tater ship’ is glorious — closed captioning turning a dictatorship into an intergalactic potato-delivery service is exactly the kind of accidental poetry that makes you love live captions. Nine years on and it absolutely still lands. We collect caption bloopers like this in our house, and this one is going straight to the top of the list. Thanks for the laugh.

I hadn’t thought of keeping a list of them, but that’s a good idea.It wouldn’t take long to get quite a few on the list.

I absolutely hate that, especially if I try to write a word or two in another language.

Closed captioning translations are pretty funny. Used this recently and you would think AI now has a hand in it. Still hit or miss. Happy Monday Anneli. Allan

Lots of misses. Sometimes I turn on the captioning just for a laugh.

Ha! I’ve been following you for at least nine years and somehow missed this. Glad you reposted.
My son also loves closed captions turned on. For me, they’re distracting and I would have missed this tidbit.

Sometimes they’re absolutely necessary. Just the other day I had to rewind and turn on the captioning because simply rewinding three times didn’t tell me that the man was saying “annual” review. Without the captioning I was sure he was talking about anatomy. Sorry, but that’s what it sounded like. So sometimes the captioning helps make it right.

I am always amused when I persue a podcast transcript and see all of the errors, some with very funny, newly-created meanings. As much as I love potatoes, I am all for a ride on a disc tater ship.🥔

That would be fun. Were your parents adventurous? If so , when you return you can tell people that you are a potato chip off the old block.
