Owl photo by neighbour, R.G., of cougar video fame.
Just look at that poor little rabbit,
I’m thinking how great he will taste,
But running away’s not his habit,
His sense of survival, a waste.
Perhaps I should scrounge up some pity
And let him escape his bad luck,
This squirrel would make dinner so pretty,
Unless he escapes, nip and tuck.
Oh dear, it’s that barred owl prowling,
Just look at his beak and his claws,
I’d bite him and send him off howling,
But he is too big for my jaws.
We need to convene a town meeting,
Though making rules stick is quite hard,
“Goodbye” is our standard owl greeting,
“A barred owl should always be barred.”

Yes, there would definitely be swooping and grieving, but that’s how nature works, too. Great poem and these photos are terrific, Anneli.

We hear owls most nights in the fall and winter. If not for them, we would be overrun by rabbits.

That’s a fun and clever poem. That owl seems concerned about the fate of his dinner.

When I studied the owl photo I thought he looked so sad, as if he was sorry for whatever animal he was planning to eat. I wonder if animals feel compassion.

They do feel compassion. I’ve read about this. However, maybe not for their prey.

Wonderful, I love your fun poems and photos Anneli! That’s nature being nature. It must be the way the rabbit was photographed but he looks very muscular to me. 😂❤️💪🏻

He definitely looks well fed. So will the owl be if he takes him.

Your words and photos convey a sense of survival Anneli. Owls are remarkable hunters. Happy Thursday. Allan

They really are, Allan. When I was driving along, I once saw an owl fly across the road towards a wooded area. He had a rabbit in his clutches and it was all the owl could do to keep him above ground as he flew. It was a heavy load. The owl would eat well that day.

Beautiful photos, Anneli. It’s no wonder you have so many owls gathering in your neighbourhood. The word has spread amongst the owl population about the amazing smorgasbord available to them.

Somehow they always appear here in the fall. They must remember the bounty from the last season and return for their version of Thanksgiving.

The photos are wonderful. Owls serve an important purpose in nature and yet I still feel badly for their prey.

I feel the same about owls. Beautiful creatures. Too bad they couldn’t all be vegetarians.

It might be an unwelcome sight to the rabbit and squirrel, but that is certainly a very splendid owl.
I saw a rabbit being carried off by a buzzard the other day.
