Dinner Time?

Owl photo by neighbour, R.G., of cougar video fame.

Just look at that poor little rabbit,

I’m thinking how great he will taste,

But running away’s not his habit,

His sense of survival, a waste.

Perhaps I should scrounge up some pity

And let him escape his bad luck,

This squirrel would make dinner so pretty,

Unless he escapes, nip and tuck.

Oh dear, it’s that barred owl prowling,

Just look at his beak and his claws,

I’d bite him and send him off howling,

But he is too big for my jaws.

We need to convene a town meeting,

Though making rules stick is quite hard,

“Goodbye” is our standard owl greeting,

“A barred owl should always be barred.”

We find the barred owl to be scary,

And hope he will silently leave,

If not, we must always be wary,

Or he will swoop down and we’ll grieve.

Yes, there would definitely be swooping and grieving, but that’s how nature works, too. Great poem and these photos are terrific, Anneli.

That’s a fun and clever poem. That owl seems concerned about the fate of his dinner.

Wonderful, I love your fun poems and photos Anneli! That’s nature being nature. It must be the way the rabbit was photographed but he looks very muscular to me. 😂❤️💪🏻

Your words and photos convey a sense of survival Anneli. Owls are remarkable hunters. Happy Thursday. Allan

They really are, Allan. When I was driving along, I once saw an owl fly across the road towards a wooded area. He had a rabbit in his clutches and it was all the owl could do to keep him above ground as he flew. It was a heavy load. The owl would eat well that day.

Beautiful photos, Anneli. It’s no wonder you have so many owls gathering in your neighbourhood. The word has spread amongst the owl population about the amazing smorgasbord available to them.

The photos are wonderful. Owls serve an important purpose in nature and yet I still feel badly for their prey.

It might be an unwelcome sight to the rabbit and squirrel, but that is certainly a very splendid owl.

I saw a rabbit being carried off by a buzzard the other day.

Great closeups! It doesn’t look like that rabbit has missed too many meals. 😁
