It’s quiet on the prairie land,
Save whispers in the leaves,
I’m safe above coyote’s band
Because they can’t climb trees.

Beware, I say, of Halloween,
When spooks and bats abound,
When ghosts at night drift in between
The witches swirling ’round.
Don’t fret for me, I set the scene,
With orange fur and black,
I play my part on Halloween,
I yowl and arch my back.
So run coyotes, run away,
Until that black night’s done,
Your pack will be afraid to stay,
I’ll be the bravest one.

Thanks, Julie. I don’t like too much horror at Halloween (or any time), but this pretty kitty just had the right colours.

I had started to comment about not liking the horror part of Halloween, but it didn’t post. I was a reading teacher for many years, (first grade) and this has a lovely Halloween spirit without the gore, great photos and a lovely ending. It’s the kind of thing I would have liked my young students to read. Way to go!

Hey!! So was I. I taught grade one (and sometimes 1-2, or 2) for years, and I’ve always felt it was not right to frighten little kids with horror at Halloween or any other time. So glad to have your sensible support. Thanks, Julie.

I’ve always loved dogs, but I love cats just as much. This one was particularly pretty.

I love the poem and the photos.
Here in Ireland, fireworks are the issue for pets at Hallowe’en. They’re illegal, but that doesn’t appear to be a deterrent

It must be terrifying for them. I know where my pets would be in that case. Safe with me in the house.

Thanks, Erika. Have a nice relaxing Sunday. Your time changed today, didn’t it? So you get an extra hour?

I agree with you. This is the first time that our part of Canada is not doing the time change. I hope it works out well.

What a pretty cat! There’s an interesting tidbit in the last verse of your poem: the rhythm depends on whether ‘coyotes’ is pronounced with two syllables or three. I was a two-syllable gal until I moved to Texas, and now I generally hear three syllables. It’s interesting!

Funny that you picked up on that. Linda, because, as I reread it, I hoped readers would pronounce it the three-syllable way. It doesn’t work well otherwise.
