“Folks, I’ve been working really hard from first light to last, collecting hazelnuts and hiding them for later. I hope you won’t mind if I take time to have a snack. Gotta keep up my strength.”
“Watch me in this video. See how fast I twirl this hazelnut around so I can eat it evenly on all sides. Kind of the way Anneli eats an ice cream cone, except she can’t go as fast as I can. Also, she doesn’t use her teeth, but I need to use mine to cut away the nutshell when it gets in the way.
And by the way, Anneli says to say she’s sorry she fumbled the camera partway through. Doesn’t show me at my best, but she tries.”

You’d think the squirrels around here were starving, the way they gobble their food, but maybe they sense that hard times are ahead.

I think so too. I only worry that they’re so used to us that they won’t beware of our dog. I’m constantly watching to make sure the dog is not near the squirrels but just now they are going long distances on the ground to bury the hazelnuts and it worries me. Just have to hope it works out okay.

He is sooo cute! I love how he spins the nut and shaves it, and that tiny jaw is moving so fast! It sounds very peaceful at your home, Anneli. ❤️

I imagine it would, because of all the trees in Michigan.

Of course. When Michigan was first settled, they found the state to be unending forests and swamps. 200 or more years later, flying over the state you can’t help but notice the many lakes left behind when the glaciers retreated ten thousand years ago. In a nearby township where I lived, there is a huge, deep hole left there by water melting off of the glaciers, so interesting!

I agree with you. He’s such a cutie. So fast with how he gets the nuts open and then eats with his jaws going so fast it’s hard to follow with my eyes.

Isn’t it funny how we gravitate towards any features that are like humans? Mammals cuddling their babies, animals that use hands (fingers) like we do…. But yes, I think it adds to the cuteness factor.

Thanks, Peter. Later, after I posted the video, I noticed that there is another hazelnut on the branch behind him, when he’s ready for seconds.

Cute. The squirrels are going crazy out there right now. They’re everywhere and it’s driving my dog nuts. No pun intended. 😉

I love to see them – at least, the red squirrels. I don’t care so much for the gray squirrels (which also come in black). They’re hard on everything, especially hard on the red squirrel population. But yes, it’s the season for planning and saving for a hard winter. That goes for people as well as animals.

What a beautiful photo with all those warm autumn colors. And a cool video. I’ve never seen squirrels twirl a nut as they eat. Like an ice cream cone. Lol. A fun post, Anneli.

Thanks, Diana. Wish you could have been there to see it. These guys are not shy at all (which worries me a bit). But it allows me to get quite close for photos.

All this wildlife snacking on hazelnuts has no idea how useful it is to mammal surveyors, at least on this side of the pond. It’s always a treat to find a hazelnut that’s been opened by a dormouse but squirrels are certainly big fans too. Cute video!

I was upset at first (a few years ago) when the squirrels showed up here and started taking all the nuts, but now I gladly hand over all they want. There is still lots for me (this year, anyway).
