Purple Poppy

Our milky blood is in demand,

For making dreamy drugs,

Our flowers grow o’er all the land,

We’re sought after by thugs.

It’s unfortunately true that these beautiful flowers are sought for the wrong reasons.

    Dear Anneli
We have so many poppies that our area is called Poppyland, but not such deep purple ones. Our poppies with the milk for dreams are very light purple.
    Beautifully photographed.
    Thanks

I love this paragraph from L. Frank Baum’s book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. “They walked along listening to the singing of the brightly colored birds and looking at the lovely flowers which now became so thick that the ground was carpeted with them. There were big yellow and white and blue and purple blossoms, besides great clusters of scarlet poppies, which were so brilliant in color they almost dazzled Dorothy’s eyes.” Thanks for the beautiful photo and reminder, Anneli!

Didn’t know it was just the purple ones. That’s a relief.

A sad and dreamy side effect. Pretty poppies poison people.

I loved your words here, Anneli, made me lol. Beautiful purple on these poppies, not a color we see so much in poppies.

It wouldn’t let me reply to the comment about Coleridge for some reason.

Yes, Coleridge did use opium, and became addicted to it.

But the poppies are lovely, as is your poem, Anneli.

They’re gorgeous. I’ve never seen this shade. We have orange poppies in our area.
