Blackberry Time

My mouth is watering as I look at these blackberries. You can make desserts with them, but why go to so much trouble? Just pop them into your mouth. They are SO good!

They make the best jam too.

Unfortunately, they are not the easiest berries to pick.  As much as I love to eat them, I hate to pick them.

O’ juicy black berry, the sweetest of all,

You ripen so perfectly now that it’s fall.

I reach up to pick you, but you say, “I’ll prick you!

I’ll tangle your sleeve and for help you will call.”

“If that doesn’t work, I will call on a friend,

A wasp or a hornet will gladly attend.

They’ll zing you and fling you, they even will sting you.

Your bullying picking time comes to an end.”

“If need be, I’ll call for more friends, you’ll be bit,

My thorns and the spiders will go for your mitt.

They prickle and tickle, you’ll be in a pickle,

Until you cry out, ‘That’s enough now! I quit!'”

It has been many years since I picked blackberries, but as I remember how it was…your poem describes it pretty well. They sure are yummy but for sure not easy or fun to pick.

Blackberries are delicious but yes, not the easiest to pick!

Blackberry picking was one of the delights of my childhood. Set off with a bowl (or two) and come home with a wonderful harvest.

But many people pick them as soon as they are black. They’ve not had time to make the sugars yet, and are quite sour. At least here in the UK. I always reckoned to leave them until at least the end of August at least when they’ve developed their sweetness. Unfortunately, people pick them early and many are gone by the time they are truly ripe.

I love your poem, though. So evocative of blackberry picking.

I love everything blackberry…. except picking them! I’ve seen thornless blackberries but don’t know if the fruits taste as good as these….

You think like I do, Kiki! As for the thornless kind, I bought a couple of plants a few years ago and had them growing on my garden fence. They got big berries, but the flavour was quite different. They tasted almost like a blackberry wine that wasn’t quite going to be the best vintage. Definitely not as good as the wild blackberry by a long shot. Easier to pick, but not worth picking, IMHO.

    Dear Anneli
Here we have a poor blackberry year. It was too dry and hot. But an amazing fig-year. We have masses of figs. Unfortunately, they are all ripe at the same time.
    Enjoy your blackberries

Ah, yes. Blackberry season is upon us! I’ve started filling one container a day despite the thorns, tiny prickers, and wasps. It’s worth it, I think. 🙂 A fun poem, Anneli. Enjoy popping them in your mouth.

We have a lot of wild berries but I haven’t seen these. They guard their sweetness well!

I love them. Now I get why they cost more than other berries, because of how they’re picked. 🙂

Yum! As a child, the berries grew wild by the train tracks. An equal number went into my mouth as in the basket!

My favorite berry, certainly! Back on the east coast where I grew up, blackberries gave me my very first job: picking in the patch behind my house and selling to the local farmer’s market by the quart. Where I live now in Northern CA they grow along the roadsides. I never leave the house without a container or bag in this season. Yum! Many in my freezer already.
