Now and Then

Against all odds, the cluster of daffodils that pops up near the fir trees every year, has decided to make a dash for the light of day.

For each of the flowers, the bigger photo is now, and the smaller photos at the side are what they will look like later this spring.

It’s our job to welcome spring,

We’re the first to do our thing,

What a let down it would be,

If there were no daffs to see.

Irises popping up.

Iris and her girlie gaggle,

Push the dirt, don’t want to straggle,

Iris girls put on a show,

Can-can dancers in a row.

Oriental poppies beginning to grow already.

Oriental poppy leaves

Grow in spurts, the ground upheaves,

Happy that they’re fenced right in

See the misery of their kin.

Below are the not-so-lucky ones.

Poppy Sisters, maimed we see,

Just outside the fence so free,

Bunnies come along at night,

Eat them up, bite after bite.

I noticed a couple of weeks back spring bulbs shooting up from my garden. So I am looking forward to seeing the display.

In my garden there’s still just snow and ice. It’s slowly thawing and then in the end, I will see all those spring flowers too, just like you. Thanks for sharing those lovely pictures and the poems.

    Hi Anneli
Here it’s all white, carpets of snowdrops everywhere, and some daffodils coming out in between.

Signs of hope for spring. Poor little maimed poppies. Hope the bunnies tummies got full. Cheers Anneli. Allan

Beautiful signs of spring. I hope to see them around here soon. Sorry about the plant but those little bunnies were hungry. Your photos are always great and I enjoy them so much.

Beautiful flowers in your garden. You are getting them early. It is too bad the bunnies ate some of them but bunnies have to live too.

Definitely signs of spring around. We’ve a daphne in bloom (lovely perfume), daffodils are budding, two primroses out, tulips sprouting, snowdrops in the park.

And the birds are singing, even though it’s not sunny.

    Lovely poem.

Wow. Your climate must behave differently than here. No way I get any growth in early February. BTW, I love that misty water photo on your header.

Yes, it really is different from your climate, Lori. You’re in the interior of the continent and that makes a big difference in the high and low temperature ranges, with more freezing overnight for longer as we get into spring. But at least you don’t get that constant mist and fog (which makes a pretty picture, as you say, but becomes a burden of its own).

This was so wonderful, Anneli! Your upcoming bulbs are terrific. I share your joy in spotting the first spring signs of the bulbs. I also enjoyed the smaller photos with the later results of beautiful flowers and the really fun poems that accompanied each species. Spring is on its way.

Wow, the sight of spring growth is lovely, especially iris. No plant dare pop their head up here in the frozen tundra for over a month already. 🤣

Those darn Bunnies making that hunt for the sunnies a dangerous endeavor.
