My eagle eye inspects the sky
To ferret out the chill,
And now I’m left to wonder why
The snow came down at will.
I know it’s colder in the heights,
And all the air was wet,
So pondering that, I knew by rights,
That snow was what we’d get.

I’ve fluffed my feathers up a tad
To keep the warmth inside,
I’ll check the depth of snow we’ve had,
And take a chilly glide.

I hope you’re hibernating, all
You creatures of the hills,
You must have known this snow could fall,
It’s testing all our wills.
But worry not, the rain will pour,
And wash the ice away,
Then soothing days will evermore,
Bring sunshine every day.

A tough time of year for all animals and birds. They can’t wait for spring and easier hunting. Have a good Sunday Anneli. Allan

Yes, it sure is. Well, not much longer for the eagles. Soon it’ll be herring time and the beaches will be a smorgasbord.

Oh, Jennie. I can’t wait. It was such a raw day today and we have a week of cold (snowy?) weather ahead of us before it starts to warm up. Thanks for visiting our cold island today. I hope your weather is better. You’ve had some awful cold and snowy days if the TV weather reports are to be believed.

Thank you, Thomas. That eagle was sitting at the top of a fir tree about 500 ft. from our house when I took his picture. I was lucky it turned out okay. He posed very quietly without wiggling around. I thought he deserved his thoughts to be put into rhyme. Thanks for reading.

You must have a very good camera and be a good photographer. At first I assumed it was a stock photo.

It’s a Nikon P950, so…pretty good for something just beyond beginner level, and I consider myself very much a beginner. The great thing is that we have a lot of birds and some nice scenery here on Vancouver Island, so that helps a lot.

Thanks, Lynette. The eagles are quite active these days. I think Thomas may be right in suggesting that everything is hungry right about now.

Yes, I’ve seen our two resident eagles out hunting almost every day.

In our area the herring spawning provides lots of food for all kinds of life on the beach. It usually happens early March.

That will work well for yours but here there’s nothing like that so they have to prey on coots, rabbits, ducks and squirrels too if they can get them.

Lovely photos Anneli, and as much as I’d like no snow, we could really use some on all the mountain tops. — Sonja

That eagle must be proud to realize how he inspired you for this gorgeous poem, Anneli! He’ll let us know if spring is in sight. I’ve been doing so well this winter but finally got a cold two days ago. I’m getting better and better, though. Can’t wait for the sunshine.

0h, yes. That eagle’s ego was insufferable. I’m sorry you got that cold. It has been really bad here for flu and colds this winter. But we’ll soon be finished with that misery, and happily singing in the sunshine.

The eagle was quite far away so I was surprised that he showed up so well. I bet he had quite the view from up there.
