Another sewing class; another bag.
This one was not quite as easy to make as my usual straightforward bags, but I like how it turned out and I’ve learned a few new things. These handles stitched onto the side of the bag hide the stitching of the outside pocket.
This was a different way to add handles to a bag, but as you can see in the next photo …
it also has D-rings sewn into the sides for clipping on a longer strap if I want to carry the bag over my shoulder.
Inside the bag, I have a pocket for my phone and my keys, or whatever else I want to have handy so it doesn’t get lost in the depths of the bag.
The zipper is one of those that you buy by the meter and cut to the length you need. You just have to be careful not to lose the zipper pull before you get the zipper sewn into the bag.
Now I’m ready for a short trip where I only need to travel light. Not sure where I want to go when the best place is home, but who knows? I may think of something.

Thanks, Lynette. I was lucky with the upholstery-weight material. I think it was a hand-me-down from a friend long ago and I finally found a use for it.

That is beautiful. You’re going to have to add an etsy store to your accomplishments.

Ha! I’d go broke if I tried to make a business out of my sewing. But this bag is kind of nice. Sure wasn’t easy to make. Not for me anyway.

The bag turned out wonderfully — not only beautiful, but clearly very thoughtfully designed. Details such as the cleverly integrated handles and the D-rings show how much design and construction can exist even in seemingly “simple” everyday objects. And your photos are, as always, wonderfully. They not only show the finished piece, but also make the creative process easy to follow. One immediately senses the patience, precision, and genuine pleasure in making things by hand.
I especially liked your final sentence. “The best place is home” feels refreshingly unpretentious and deeply true at the same time. Perhaps the best journeys are the ones where we know we’ll be happy to return 😉.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments, Rosie. I’m especially pleased that you understand “the best place is home.” I know many people who don’t feel that way, and I think it’s sad. One couple we went to Mexico with said to me what a shame it was that we had to go home in a few days. They had a nice house and were not looking forward to going home. I lived in a very small, old house at that time and was looking forward to being home again, even though it had been a nice holiday. I learned then the difference between a house and a home.

I think A house can be comfortable, beautiful, even impressive, and still not feel like home. Home seems to be something quieter and deeper: the place where one’s inner rhythm settles naturally again. I also find it touching that you were genuinely looking forward to returning to your small old house after a lovely holiday. That says far more about a life than any luxurious destination ever could. Perhaps that is one of the real signs of contentment: not needing to escape one’s own life in order to enjoy it 😉.

Closest I have come to sewing was watching the doctors sew up all my wounds over the many years, but I had now idea you could buy zippers and cut them to size. Nice work!
