Pileated Woodpecker
So glad the people left these stumps,
They’re like my dining room,
Without them I’d be in the dumps,
No food, just doom and gloom.
Lunaria
Otherwise known as money plant, silver dollar plant, and honesty (for its seed pods’ transparency).
My lengthy bloom should suit your needs,
You’ll find me in your garden,
With dollar coins to hold the seeds,
My greed I hope you’ll pardon.
I don’t ask much, just water me,
I’ll grow most anywhere,
In every yard I ought to be,
I’ll grow up tall and fair.
Peacock
Two peacock photos taken at two different friends’ houses.
It’s not my fault I look so fine,
My feathers seem so proud,
But deep inside this heart of mine,
No vanity’s allowed.
I’m just a bird of humble stock,
A very pretty strain,
I may be peahen or peacock
But don’t call me peabrain.
Dogwood
The dogwood has been B.C.’s provincial flower since 1956.
I’m trying to teach this bird some tricks–
The petal count for blossoms.
Though some have four, some five, some six,
The difficulty’s awesome.

I am in fact a tree,
My flowers bloom for all to see,
I glow with majesty.
Great Blue Heron
Now where was it I saw that frog?
I know he’ll taste so fine.
I think I’ll find him by that log,
And then begin to dine.
Rudbeckia
My sunny face is full of cheer,
I take my time to bloom,
But finishing the growing year,
Gives hope before the gloom.
Steller’s Jay
*Named after Georg Wilhelm Steller, a German naturalist, who was the first European to record them in 1741.
I know I’m pretty, but beware,
My beak is tough as nails,
If any challenger would dare,
My bet is that he fails.
I get first choice of all the food,
You wait there on your post,
It’s not that I am being rude,
I take the best and most.
Red Hot Pokers
They look like pokers for a fire,
I know they are not hot,
Their nectar sweet is my desire,
And that is what I got.
But hotter than the poker’s threat
The stinger of that bee,
If it could sting me, then I bet,
On fire I would be.
