These chickadees and the nuthatch at the feeders were not there today. This picture was taken on another day. It is perhaps lucky that I’ve been lazy about refilling the feeder these past three sunny days. With the feeders empty today, there were no birds nearby when the visitor swooped in like a harrier jet this afternoon.
Except he was not a harrier; he was a Cooper’s hawk. He sat on the fence, wondering why there were no birds at the feeder.
Maybe they’re hiding in the shrubbery below the feeder.
Disappointed, he flew away to check out the neighbours’ birdfeeders.

Glad that your feeders were empty! Mr Hawk will have to find some other lunch. Iβve not seen any hawks up here, probably because the ravens (who are gigantic – much larger than the hawk pictured here) would scare them off!

I think I’d rather see a hawk than a crow or a raven.

I was in a panic to get the camera before he flew away. Shot these through a not perfectly clean window, but was glad to get any pics at all. He is a beauty, but I’m glad he went without dinner – at least at my place.

I understand this completely. This is a very aggressive specie.

They have to eat too, but I hate for it to happen in my yard, especially if I lured the songbirds here with my feeders.

No wonder there were no birds at the feeders. If this happens here, there must be a hawk around, like in your case. Very good pictures!

Thanks, Ursula. I was glad I hadn’t filled the feeders and that there were few birds around to be targets for the hawk.

Dear Anneli
What amazing photo of the hawk.
The other day we saw a hawk killing a pigeon in our garden. Our feeders are always emptied by our squirrels.

I feed the squirrels separately and at a distance from the birdfeeders, and I make their food more interesting, but we can’t tell them where not to go. I know there are a lot of pigeons, but still, I’d hate to see one get killed. And yet, the hawk has to eat too. Nature is not Disney.

I had a Cooper’s around last winter — a juvenile. They’re beautiful, and skilled as can be at hunting. He (or one of his kind) still may be around, since I find dove feathers from time to time. But, as I remind myself, everyone has to eat!

I wish nature wasn’t so cruel, but that’s just how it is. I like to eat chicken and beef….

Lucky indeed. It would have been feeding time for the hawk. Great shots. We have Merlin Falcons here that do their best to harry the crows. They often fly through our yard but seldom stop. Have a great Thursday Anneli. Allan

I had merlins hanging around here for two years. They nested nearby. They were beautiful to watch but, in a way, I was glad when they moved on.

Wow. Cool. The only way I see hawks here is high up in the trees or sky. Never perched low like that on a bird bath or a fence. He stayed long enough for you to snap those pics, too!

He stayed until he detected movement inside the house. I took about a dozen pictures and had to delete most of them, but a couple of them turned out okay before he took off.

He was only pretending to be a harrier, the way he flew in, but he’s a Cooper’s, and yes, he does look fierce. The birdfeeder area goes silent when he shows up.
