Frosty Food

Fields

Of frost

Crunch under

Our cold, webbed feet

As we nuzzle plants

To find their juicy roots.

Icy air drives us to eat

From dawn to dusk to keep our heat.

Memories of balmy spring breezes

Help us survive the harsh winter freezes.

That’s a nice photo of all of them in the field. So true, the pickings are becoming very slim for them.

Are those birds geese, the white and dark ones? Are the brown ones Canada geese? Nice picture!

Your poem is so true, they try to survive through wintertime, with minimum food. I just can’t understand how the tiny birds survive here.

I know what you mean. I have those same thoughts. I try to help by feeding the birds through the winter, but it’s only the tiniest bit of help. I suppose winter helps to ensure survival only of the fittest, making the surviving future breeders stronger, but it’s such a harsh lesson, and we humans have long ago become compassionate enough to help the weak. It makes the winter kills all the more heartbreaking.

Winter in most climates is hard on all wildlife. On our walk yesterday, everything was under deep snow or covered in ice. Like us, I am sure they are longing for spring. Happy Saturday Anneli. Allan

Is that a group of both snow and Canada geese? I think so, but I see them so rarely I’m not sure.

It does make me wonder how they stay warm. Feathers aren’t all that insulating, are they?

Your verse describes so well the harsh conditions birds face at this time of year.
