It was a day of surprises. Yesterday, this plum tree had only tightly bunched up buds. Today the sun came out for a few minutes and the plum tree called out,
“Look at me! Look at me!
Every flower a plum will be!”
The next surprise lay at my feet as I stopped to admire the plum tree. It was just lucky I didn’t step on it.
Robin baby, where are you?
Found your shell that you picked through,
Lying by the blooming plum,
Just the size of someone’s thumb.
Morning, sparrow, golden crowned,
You don’t mind me being around,
Posing for me for so long,
Before bursting out in song.
Waxy petals calling out,
Any hummingbirds about?
We’re the colour that’s the best,
Not much sugar, that’s a test.
Try it putting out your two lips,
We are truly tasty tulips.
You rang?

Such beautiful “springing”in your yard! And you spotted a hummingbird, too. What a lovely response to your “ring.” 🙂

Odd question: When they’re ‘out in force’, do you hear all those tiny wings? Or just see? And–writerly question–do they smell like something identifiable?
Now I’m wondering if they existed 2 million years ago… I’ll be back…

Jill sent me a link to to hummingbird evolution (yay, Jill!)–is that amazing. They’re 55 myo! I had no idea. They’d be in all of my books if I’d known that. Rest assured, when you edit the next trilogy (Savage Land), you will find hummingbirds in it!

We hear their high-pitched chirping, although their wings do make a buzzing noise. Here is an article you’ll enjoy. https://wildlatitudes.com/hummingbird-evolution-50-million-years-and-still-buzzing/ Have fun with your sister!

It seems to take longer every year for the weather to warm up. I don’t believe in global warming. If it’s true, it only happens for a couple of months a year. After that, it’s global cooling for about nine or ten months. But for now, we have spring at last.

When the right signal comes from Mother nature, it is amazing how quickly buds respond and open up within hours.

The leaves are out, the blossoms are mostly out, but imagine being excited about seeing ONE bee. It’s still too cold for the pollinators and I wonder if they will show up in time. It’s still so cool and the forecast says cool for the next 14 days. But at least the frost is gone.

Most of these photos could be from Michigan. And yet you are so far from Michigan. How can that be?

Definitely Vancouver Island. Maybe Michigan has much the same climate (except I think they get cold winters).

Well, that’s because they are not near the ocean, although there are a lot of lakes. I’ve noticed a lot of the same vegetation in England as in Michigan, too.
